Computer Security Specialist/Security Technician

o Computer Security Specialists/Security Tech
The job mainly entails monitoring system security improvement through identification and remediation of system vulnerabilities. Regulating access to computer data files and preventing unauthorized modification, destruction, or disclosure. Develop plans to safeguard computer information against accidental or unauthorized modification, and to meet emergency data processing needs.

o JOB POSTINGS: Notes
(i) It could require travel which would make for a more intersting position for me. I want to know more about benefits, salary, and more detail on the traveling. CA

(ii) The company background information on the posting was convenient, in the case of a job interview I wouldn't have to research. Job responsibilities and requirements clearly and thoroughly stated; it seems like very high tech stuff. No benefits or salary estimation. NJ

(iii) I like the benefits with this job offering and that it's a full time position. I wouldn't mind working at this company. MO

I didn't see anything in Texas.

o Career Path C
This career field appealed to me because it is relevant, seems fun, the salary is good, and computer security specialist is a growing career field. I like that computer security has to continue to evolve in order to prevent destruction or disclosure of information, which is a challenge but very much worth it. I would enjoy counterattacking the threats and out thinking them. There is a possibility that I will pursue this career. Perhaps, it's my plan C career.

My Network

1)I have a cable connection with At&t. ISP SBC Internet Services

2)My download speed is 2.92 Mb/s and upload speed 85Mb/s

3)I think it is wireless because I can go about my apartment without a wire connection. I do have a modem that works with the outside router but I'm not sure if that is mainly for my tv or internet service.

4)From what I was told by the set up service man was that I had a password that someone would need to enter my network, so he told me to secure my password. I wonder if I need to change it periodically for a safer network. Is it possible for someone to figure out my password? I have a WPA PSK security and the only firewall I'm aware of is the Windows firewall that protects my system.

5)I need to backup my data for my laptops, asap. It's one of those things I've been meaning to do for a while now. I do have backup discs for my desktop computer though.

6)Yes, I just purchased a special computer cord to setup both my computer's to share information and items I had stored on one because I got tired of going back and forth between the two. I have an Epson printer/scanner that I got deal on when I puchased a laptop at Bestbuy. It is installed to both laptops and when I need to print, I put the Epson USB wire into the laptop and press print. My next thing to learn is how to print without using the Epson USB wire, similar to a libraries printing setup.

Sound Cards & Speakers

Internal optical drive:I want two drives that are interchangable, a floppy disk drive and a dvd/CD-Rom drive.

Printer:Having a printer is essential and I would get one with a scanner.

Sound card and Speakers:They don't have to be extravagant as long as the sound is clear and the bass good.

Pointing devices: (mice) Any cheap mouse will due.

External Storage:I would start off with USB disks of various storage capacitiies.

Tv Tuner:I don't need this option or the gaming accessories because I like the classic arcade games that don't need any extra equipment.

I want the options that will make my computing easier, more comfortable, and creative.

Hard Drive/Storage

Inspiron 15z

160GB 5.4K Hard drive (Included in the price)

250GB 5.4K Hard drive add $25 to the price

320GB 7.2K Hard drive add $125 to the price

500GB 7.2K Hard drive add $175 to the price

I like the fourth option but it probably would be a bit much for me right now although I do have a huge song collection on my laptop. However, I think 320GB 7200 hard drive is good.

512 MB of RAM for Microsoft Office and Student 2007

RAM/MEMORY

Options

A)Processors:Intel Pentium Dual Core SU4100 (1.3Ghz,800Mhz,2MB)
Memory - 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 1066Mhz/ Starting Price $549.00

B)Intel Pentium Dual Core (1.3Ghz,800Mhz,2MB)
Memory - 4GB Shared DC DDR3 1066Mhz/ Starting Price $599.00, and

C)Intel Core Duo SU7300 (1.3Hhz,800Mhz,3MB) Memory - 4GB Shared DC DDR3 1066Mhz/ Starting Price $649.00
also 4GB Shared DC DDR3 1066Mhz

Up to 6GB of 1067Mhz DDR3 SRAM

The first two options A and B are almost identical, the 2GB of option B seperate them. Options B and C have the same memory components, however, the beefier and faster processor is option C.
I think option C would suit me best. I would be able to run my internet browser and Windows Office and Student Suite. Chosing the option with the most space would be too much right now but I don't see it as too much. I feel like I will have the memory when I need it.

Processor & Motherboard/Buses

DELL INSPIRON 15Z: $549.00 starting price

What options - Core, cache, price, front side bus, and clock speed?
What are the difference between the two options?
System that is needed to run? Highest suggested processor speed?
What option will you select and why do you need to upgrade?

Options -Dual core, cache:3MB , price:$549.00, front side bus:800MHz, and clock speed:1.3GHz
Although, I am heavily focused on school, I still like to unwind in my free time so space for media applications is appreciated.
Crisp sound quality and an underlining bass tone would be ideal.

Intel Core 2Duo SU7300 [1.3GHz,800MHz,3MB] Add $65.00 or Intel Core 2Duo SU9400 [1.4GHz,800MHz,3MB] Add $155.00
I pick the second option.
The major differences is the room I'll be given to be creative & learn (MS Home and Student Suite and Internet Explorer 8 Browser), enjoy media software like my expanding music collection, and the fastness with which the system will run.
I'm looking for 4GB of RAM & 500GB 5400 or 7200 (rpm), because I want my system to be able to handle all the cutting edge projects that I'm focused on in school and in pastime. I'm also preparing for 3 to 4 years down the road I'll have the space for anything I may want to do.

Form Factor & Base Configuration

I will be in school for the next three years so my main focus is having a computer that I will write papers and create projects with. I have no need to run any sophisticated applications at this time, in fact, my computer usage is narrowed down to school projects, using the internet, and downloading music. However, down the road I see myself using more intricate apps and expanding the programs I use. Given the hectic schedule I have and my activities on computers; I have written the specifications and features I need and desire for a new computer.

I'm searching for a stylish and portable computer. A fast, dual-core processor is a must. I would like as much memory as I can get, preferably 4GB, which will allow me to add programs and great for 3-4 years down the road. My hopes is that I will be able to interchange my floppy disc drive with a CD/DVD (D:) drive. Those are the most important specifications that I desire, a few other features I want is a spacious keyboard, three or more USB ports, and a 14-16 inch lcd screen.

The Dell Inspiron 15z is the laptop that caught my eye because it's customizable, it gets to the root of my daily activities on a computer, Intel core 2 duo processor, and 500GB hard drive at 7200 (rpm). I chose a computer that I could use for school and also enjoy multimedia apps on too. I didn't think an extravagant laptop fit my outline of activity at this moment and the Inspiron 15z better suits my computer comprehension.

My Social Networking Tools

MySpace - The two incredible features of MySpace are multimedia uploading capabilities and the Privacy options. For example, there is music and games offered. The only downside would be it's more of a visually creative social site and could be more of a serious communicative place to network but then that also depends on each individuals style. MySpace makes it simple to find people with similar interests or hobbies.

Facebook - It is similar to MySpace in it's security and privacy offerings, however it has seperate networks that includes schools and businesses. Facebook was the site that had more of an emphasis on communicating with folks and less of the multimedia set up that exists at MySpace. So I assume there is more socializing at Facebook, but again the preference of the networker is what is important. Facebook greatly aided in finding friends and people who would more readily connect with the same interests.

hi5 - A social site that makes networking with people globally possible. People across the world share in the experience of hi5 which makes it one of the popular social sites worldwide. It has a fun and creative interface. The security offerings are simple and straightforward. Networkers can decide who sees their profile and number of other security options. It's obviously not as popular as the previous two social networking sites but hi5 has just as much to offer as far as multimedia uploads (pictures, music...) and communication through blogs & journals. They also have a chatroom for more communicative folks and they don't have advertisements on the site.

I had a MySpace account a long time ago but I never kept it up and I can't remember the name or password I used for it. hi5 appeals to me the most but I have more friends that participate on MySpace. So, I would chose MySpace for that reason. I like Facebook too and have friends that tell me I should sign up on the site.

My Email Platform

aim free service- a free email service from aol. I like this email the best because the protection from spam and viruses is great and for the simplest things I use email for it fits me well. Uploading video is easy and fun.

Hotmail free service- This service also fits the low maintenance email user too. Updates and system upgrades are communicated frequently through emails from the company. Using the attachment and printing is easy.

Yahoo free service- Yahoo is great for lesser serious content and their spam blocker could improve. Calendar and a notepad is offered for organization. Prioritize email option helps manage time and they have a cool chat capability that can be accessed from the email inbox. Syncing between media devices was accessible. Overall, Yahoo is good.

I mainly like my email accounts to be easy to search, to have protection from spam, viruses, to have attachment and printing options. I have many email accounts setup, I like hotmail and aim. I use hotmail the most, but I also felt it was necessary to have an account like aim because as an over the road truck driver being away from home most of the time I didn't want to lose my emails through inactivity.

Zoho has some interesting applications that would be worth checking out.

Pop-Up Blockers and Web Filters

Pop-Up Blockers

I would need a Pop-Up Blocker if I didn't have one because it controls interference from advertisers and perhaps explicit material not suitable for young computer users.

1.(Kaspersky $59.99 and Internet Explorer pop-up blocker in my browser)
www.kaspersky.com
Kaspersky is my favorite in this category because I have it and it does a great job blocking pop-ups. It has excellent pop-up blocking protection but can interrupt me from time to time. Kaspersky has a high price so finding a good discount is important.
System requirements- MS Internet Explorer 6 or higher. Windows XP, Windows 7,and Windows Vista.

2.Adscleaner v.4.3 $34.95
www.adscleaner.com
Adscleaner with Internet explorer
Ad blocker, pop-up blocker, and an privacy online feature. It automatically upgrades ad blocker list.
http://www.pcmag.co.uk/downloads/1154138
System requirements- Windows: NT/2000/XP

3.AVG - free of charge
free.avg.com
Terrific url blocker
One flaw is that doesn't have parental controls.
System requirements- Windows 2000 to Windows 7 x64 edition.

I would choose Kaspersky, Adscleaner, or AVG. I like the way Kaspersky blocks pop-ups with Internet Explorer. I like AVG too, because of its features and I don't share my computer with children so parental control is not a big problem for me. I like Adscleaner the best because of all the extra features that are added to the pop-up stopper.

Web Filters

I believe I would need a web filter for the disruptive content that try to show itself on my computer. I am happy to have excellent Pop-up Blockers and web filters installed on my computers, so I don't have nuisances that may come with being unprotected.

1.Safe Eyes $49.95
Content, parental, and time controls make this product a standout. Also has filtering game options. Instant alerts and it syncs with Safe Eyes Mobile. Available for PC and Mac/ A bit pricey though.
System requirements- Windows XP/2000/NT/XE/98/Mac

2.Content Protect $39.99
Great, affordable internet filtering, but it's not advanced in it's monitoring abilities. Immediate web site unblocking available which is hard to find on the market today. Can access your information from any computer.
System requirements- Windows Operating Systems

3.K9 Web Protection- free of charge
This filtering software is excellent for families. Filters out potentially dangerous email. Easy to download and it's free.
System requirements- Windows Operating Systems 2000/XP/Vista

I like them all, I wish I could take the best features from each program. (www.internetsafety.com and www.wellresearchedreviews.com were very helpful and informative websites.)

My Spyware

Spyware

1.Trend Micro AntiVirus + AntiSpyware $39.95
Spectacular defense against spyware, rootkits, and other malicious threats. Real-time scanning options to keep your computer protected all the time.
System requirements- Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP.

2.Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite $34.95
A great option for spyware removal.
System requirements- Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows XP.

3.Norton 2010 $39.99
Identifies and removes spyware and adware.
System requirements- MS Internet 6 or above. Windows XP, Windows 7, and Vista.

4.ESET Nod32 Antivirus 4 $39.99
Protects your computer from spyware and all malware threats.
System requirements- Windows XP, 7, Vista, and 2000 Intel and AMD

5.AVG*
Blocks and removes spyware.
System requirements- MS Windows 2000 to Windows 7 x64 edition.

6.Paretologic* XoftSpySE Anti-spyware
It removes a variety of spyware and adware.
System requirements- Windows 2000 Oper, Vista, Vista Oper., and XP.

*AVG and Paretologic are free.

I like the Trend Micro, Norton and ESET for their total features. I also like AVG because it's free. ESET for my Desktop. I would choose ESET to see the features that have been highly touted. I like AVG for my laptop.

My Virus Protection

1.Norton Anti-virus 2010: $39.99
www.store.norton.com
The highlights are uninterrupted scanning for harmful viruses or other threats and the firewall adjusts to threat levels. Norton is probably the most popular and for good reason too, it has the top of the line features that safeguard computers from many threats. My father purchased a $40 version of Norton anti-virus years ago and I remember Norton scanning the computer for threats practically every hour. Norton can be expensive so it's important to find a discount.
System requirements- MS Windows Internet 6 or above, Windows XP, Windows 7, and Windows Vista. 300 Mhz or faster processor, 512 MB (RAM), and 200 MB of available space.

2.Kaspersky 2010: $59.95
www.usa.kaspersky.com
I have this protection on my Gateway laptop. When I purchased my laptop at Bestbuy I was given a discount on the Kaspersky anti-virus so that's the main reason I use Kaspersky. I wasn't familiar with the name so I took a chance that it would provide good protection. I'm pleased with it's real time protection, (I receive important updates to keep my information safe), identity theft, two way firewall (protects from spam and hackers), and blocks spyware & adware. Kaspersky has an anti-virus for mac users. Kaspersky is expensive so it is important to find a deal.
General system requirements- MS Internet explorer 6.0 or above & 375 MB of free space on hard drive. Other System requirements- Windows XP:Intel Pentium processor 300 MHz or faster, Vista:Intel Pentium processor 800 MHz, and Windows 7: (1 GHz or higher), Pro: 1 GB (RAM)

3.McAfee 2010: $26.99
www.mcafeeprotection.com
This firewall provides anti-hacker security. Guards against viruses, blocks spyware identity theft, adds safety ratings to websites, delivers the latest software features. I had this on a desktop computer before and it worked fine. I downloaded on the internet alot back then and McAfee blocked alot of adware and Trojan worms.
System requirements- Windows XP, Vista, and 7. Must have MS Internet Explorer 6 or above. 1 Ghz processor or higher, 256 MB (RAM)or more available.

4.AVG:*
www.avgfree.com.au
Blocks hacker attacks, malware, spyware, and detects & blocks fraudulent websites. It lacks parental controls. I use the internet frequently for school, business, fun stuff, and I would like an easy-to-use anti-virus protector. I love that AVG is free because I'm always budgeting. AVG has all the protection that I would need and I will try this software once my Kaspersky becomes outdated.
System requirements- MS Windows 2000 to MS Windows 7 x64 edition. Intel Pentium 1.8 Ghz processor or faster, 550 free hard drive for installation and 512 MB (RAM)

5.Paretologic Anti-virus Plus:*
www.antiviruspros.com
Customizable scanning, locates threats in compressed files, complete removal of viruses, and blocks malware. This protection device is especially great for gamers because of creative game mode protection and it doesn't compromise the video game speed. This would be a great choice for my brother because he loves gaming.
System requirements- Windows 2000 Oper: 512 MB (RAM), Windows Vista: 512 MB (RAM) & Vista Oper: 1 GB (RAM), and Windows XP: 512 MB (RAM) Operating systems.

*AVG and Paretologic are two anti-virus programs that are freely available.

(www.pctools.com and www.nextadviser.com were helpful and informative websites.)

My Operating System

Windows 7, Windows XP, and Windows Vista are all possible to work on my computer. I currently use Windows 7 Home Premium edition on a laptop I just purchased. I like the features with this edition. It has all the features that would easily help me in my day to day routine. I am usually on internet 8 or I'm writing a paper so I only need something basic. I need a system that is simple enough to meet my basic needs and also will allow me to stretch myself to incorporate various new features in my routine. Therefore, Windows 7 Home edition is the best fit for me right now. The other editions were recommended for business users and cost more than the Home Premium. I may upgrade to Ultimate one day because I like the idea of upgrading and trying something new. The Ultimate cost alot though. However, I am satisfied with the Home edition. I purchased the new Compaq laptop I have with Windows 7 Home Premium already installed on it. Windows 7 Home Premium was also installed on the other laptop I own already too.

The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly

My topic was Tinnitus.

The Good

link http:www.dizziness-and-balance.com/disorders/hearing/tinnitus.htm
The article's author is Timothy C. Hain, MD. I searched his name and his credentials are credible. (www.tchain.com) In the article, he is very informative about the condition Tinnitus, symptoms, treatment, etc. The information on Tinnitus was thorough, accurate, and current. The last time the page was modified was February 11th, 2010. Many references were acknowledged towards the end of the website. Medical journals were used as sources. There are an abundance of links to other material on Tinnitus. The site is represented at www.alexa.com This web page on Tinnitus is one of the best based on the information I measured it with from Berkeley. There was another website that was very informative too.

The Bad
http://www.medicinenet.com/tinnitus/article/htm
The webpage purpose is to inform the public about Tinnitus. I believe the information was very informative, however there are ways the website can improve. This article doesn't present details on the subject compared to the web page above, which is partly why I think it is bad. The author of the article is John P. Cunha, DO and William C. Shiel Jr., MD is the editor. William C. Shiel is the Chief Editor for Medicinenet.com. I searched both doctors names and information came up about them as medical doctors. It is hon-code certified. There are not any references to support the information in the article. There are links to other information on Tinnitus. The information is displayed like it is common knowledge. The site is represented at www.alexa.com. The last editorial review was November 30th, 2007.

Wikipedia:Fact or Fiction (part 2)

The study that Nature did was very enlighting. I've always felt information was more accurate coming from traditional sources. The results from the study does influence my opinion about Wikipedia. I am pleased that Wikipedia is an accurate source since I read articles from the site occasionally. In the future, I will use it as a reference for a report if it is okay with the professor. Ultimately, I think it is the teachers preference that is most important, but I now give Wikipedia the respect it deserves.

Wikipedia: Fact or Fiction? (part 1)

Wikipedia is a website that I use to find basic information on a topic. I'll read what is presented on a particular topic and then I'll explore it further as part of a brain storm. I have never used any information from Wikipedia in a report unless it was general knowledge material. Mainly, because I don't think Wikipedia is considered an important informative source for a report or project. I have been assigned research papers for professorswho have preferred that I cite from various sources, for instance, medical journals, books, or encyclypedias, a person, magazines, video/audio, and websites. However, professors wanted the majority of my information to come from journals and books and less material from websites. I am not certain if all the information on Wikipedia is true or updated properly. In addition, I'm not sure who to credit for specific information in the articles, because it is constructed like common knowledge material.

Personal Computer Use Profile

I have a new Gateway Laptop that is wireless connected through At&t. I primarily use it for school and its internet service is very convenient, because I am able to make alot of business transactions from home. I use Microsoft Word everyday. My basic knowledge of Microsoft Word has helped me meet the demands of school. Educational software has helped me study and I have games that I play on my computer. Seven years ago I installed the games Centipede, Chess, and Scrabble on my desktop computer but I don't get to play them as much as I used to. I haven't set up my desktop computer yet, because I need to purchase a new processor. The processor I have now is outdated and the cooling fan works off and on. The computer technician I consulted said it would be cheaper to buy a new processor than to have to keep paying for parts for such outdated machinery. He's right but I've grown so attached to that desktop I think I'll keep it and buy a new one later. My computer makes my life comfortable, I have more ways to communicate with family and friends, I make transactions without ever leaving the house, I have tons of music from the computer, I get directions and information for many things in my life. However, the social network sites are not interesting. Overall, I would like to be more knowledgable about the programs that will be beneficial for me in school. I also think the computer can aid me in organizing my day to day activities better, too. Stubbornly, I have resisted the modern technological movement but now I'm ready to learn.

Password Strength. My password was weak.
Firewall. Yes an active firewall. Windows firewall protection.
Ad/Mal-ware. Yes, my computer has Kaspersky ad/mal-ware blocker.
Spam. No, I don't send pics and stories. I'm wary a virus is lurking.
Phishing. Yes, it's a criminal way of redirecting web users to a fake website in order to retrieve passwords, banking info, and important identification information. I'm not sure what social engineering is.
Image. I don't have my image on the internet, it would creep me out.
Data Backup. I have some data on cd's and dvd's. I'm trying to figure out how I can backup the programs on my laptop.

computer literacy revisited

Anyone who has a basic understanding of how to use a computer is computer literate. My idea was similiar to other ideas about what computer literacy is, of course the book went in to far more details. There is so much to learn about the different functions of a computer, in some ways I am very computer literate and other ways I'm gradually learning.
